A square wave is pulse width modulation in the human-audible sound frequency spectrum, 20Hz-20,000Hz.
Pulse width modulation PWM is a fancy name for turning something on and off or moving between 2 states to control something else.
How long you keep it on vs. off is called the duty cycle.
If the duty cycle is 50% you get a square wave.
if it's less you get a nasal sound.
if you vary the duty cycle over the length of the sound you get interesting effects.
but OS can't do that.
